Different redirection upon registration

Hey guys,
I would like that when the user registers he/she is redirected according to the previous page, for example:
User goest to the cart page, then registers and he's redirected to the shipping page.
IF - the user goest to the main page, then registers he goes to a page saying something like: "account created, thank you".

I tried using rules and Login Destination module, but so far no success.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
