Have created a site in two languages, with english as the default language. I don't want to break my string translations but also don't see a way to force my second language as the default when load the home page.

Using prefix URL detection, but have no idea what determines what language the home page loads as other assuming it comes from the default language selection.

We have now an option to force default language for i18n strings, check out Home » Administration » Configuration » Regional and language » Multilingual settings / Strings

Then you can safely change your default language.
