Due to the usage of fancy array dereferencing, PHP versions below 5.4 get left out. Since this is the only show-stopper for older versions of PHP, it should be fixed.

One-liners rewritten to be more verbose. Automated tests with PHP prior to 5.4 are now passing on Drupal.org's QA.
