I recently got a Google alert for one of my D6 sites:

These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.

I'd like to fix this but I am bewildered by various theme and module options.

What should i do?

Brendan: I apologize. The site is based on the Minnelli theme, has two languages and contains a 'book'.

We know a lot less about your website than you do, so it's hard for us to give you much help without more info. If you care about mobile users, then my guess is that you are going to have to bite the bullet and re-theme.

Is there no module I can add that immediately provides a mobile-friendly version? I see some D7 sites that cater for large and small screens.

You can install a module like Mobile Switch or Mobile Theme which will allow you to use one theme for desktop devices and one for mobile devices. But you still need to find/create a mobile theme and install it. The module needs a mobile theme to switch to.

I have never been a big fan of this approach. It means you have two completely separate themes. You have to put a lot of work into customization or people visiting your site on a mobile device will wonder if they are at the right place (because it looks so different). It also relies on trying to figure out what type of device the client is and clients keep changing. People will want to visit your website on their XBox or watch. But if all you care about is making google happy this might be the way to go.

But if you actually care about the experience your mobile users will have, then you might want to look into a more modern "mobile first" approach. In order to achieve this you will need a theme that is adaptive or responsive. Right now the top 5 most downloaded themes are. With these you have one theme that manages the display on any device.

But only for Drupal 7. So this approach would probably involve an upgrade.

Excellent advice. Thank you. As soon as I get some time I am going to upgrade and use a versatile theme. I think the reason I couldn't find advice in the documents was the missing word: adaptive.

Thanks again.
