OG initial setup instructions

I have a clean DRUPAL installation in which I want to learn the basics of OG. However, I have spent MANY hours going through video instructions with HOW TO setup OG and displaying with PANELS.

I believe my main problems may be narrowed down to the following:

1. Relationships: no option for GROUP BY NODE; suggestions have been made for and against using "Node from Node (on Node: Groups audience [og_group_ref])"
2. When viewing an OG group with a new panels (e.g. by using the instructions from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YFWlZF-u6s) my user name is displayed twice in the OG members section.

Does anyone have an updated recipe for integrating OG with panels?
