I have battled the question of multiple image field upload widget since Drupal 7 first came out. Years later i am still not sure there is a working solution. I see a couple image modules listed on project page that work with this module (i am sure this module works fine) but wondering if there are any known to work. The ones i have struggled with over the years (and abandoned) include:

- plup: marked as obsolete on project page. i am still using this with some success but it has issues
- mupload: sandbox and major issues preventing it from working

just wondering if people know of a multiple image upload (drag/drop would be nice but not required) widget module?

This isn't exactly what you want but I use IMCE with the IMCE plupload module. This isn't the simplest path to take as IMCE requires some configuration but it does integrate with the standard image field as well as with WYSIWYG.
