with large amount of rows, i can export to an xls but can't open the file.
i have no problems with low amounts.

It is possible that you are running out of memory. Check your apache/php error logs to be sure. If that it the case, first make sure that you are not using the drupal input filters on your report. (See Forena Configuration Screen to be sure). You can also try to increasing the amount of memory available to PHP. Large XLS files are very memory consuming.
