items missing from month view

i have a fairly complex calendar view with month display. Complex in that it uses items from nested field collections that requires 2 relationships.

the calendar appear to work fine except that the last month with items (it has 1) shows with no items (all other months show correct items).

i checked the sql that the View spits out and it shows the missing item.

i also switched display format from calendar to unformatted list, the item shows there as well.

very odd but it would seem that the Calendar formatter is somehow limiting results.
