How to change which view mode is used by default for user pages

I'd like to modify the user account page (/user, not /user/edit). I can create and modify a custom view mode to remove the page title, etc, but is there a way to change which view mode is engaged by default when people view their my account page? A view mode called default is used, but this isn't modifiable. I'd like Drupal to use a custom one instead, by default.
