Is there a way this module can be used to send a registered user a discount code for an abandoned cart X days after it was abandoned, using rules or some similar technique?

You could create a rule to send the coupon code after a period of time has elapsed. You could probably even create a rule to generate the code so it is unique for each cart. Something that's on my list to try and build ... will update here when I get to it.

Great idea - a rule to generate a one time use code that can only apply to the items in the abandoned cart, not new ones added afterwards.
