Hey there - I'm trying to set up a manuscript submission system so that users can submit private content that they can then edit, but nobody else (apart from admin) can view. Taxonomy access is too broad and doesn't recognize individual users, while node privacy byrole is too technical for the non tech-literate user base.
is there any module or hack out there that would allow me to restrict content to just the creating user?

or modules that help me to start a manuscript drupal site !!!
This should be simple.
This should be simple. Create a content-type (or use an existing one) and set the access control for users to create and edit own only. Then unset the default publishing status to not published in admin/settings/content-types. That should provide the basic functionality right out of the box. You can then add Actions and Workflow to the mix to end up with a pretty sophisticated system.
