If you create a new node, attach an image, then create a link to that image in the page, when you save the node for the first time Linkchecker creates a broken link report.
If you create the node, attach the image, and then save the node *before* putting the link to the image in the page, then no broken link is reported.

We tried to reproduce this again yesterday and cannot, so whatever was upsetting it has gone.
