This is just a rough idea that came out of thinking about how we could more actively distinguish between trusted non-spammer users and untrusted maybe-spammer users. The idea is that no one would want to follow spammers, so if someone has several followers, we can safely assume they're not a spammer can auto-grant the "skip mollom".

That will only work if people have a reason to follow each other. seeing posts by people you follow seems like a good place to start, but maybe not enough. As a bigger change, there might be room in Groups for ad-hoc groups around an individual's posts independent of formal groups, i.e. discussion nodes not in any groups. But for now, I'm just proposing a way to follow other users' posts within existing groups.

This has some potential for abuse that we'd want to mitigate, e.g. stalking other users and replying to everything they post. One option to avoid that problem is an option to prevent others from following you, or maybe limiting followers to only people you also follow, sort of how Twitter private accounts work.

There's probably a lot more to figure out here, but that's the basic idea.

Nice idea. I don't want to be an idea killer but I suppose the "confirm user" concept was created with a similar idea in mind.
