Scale width then crop height without padding height

I would like to scale all images so that they all have the same width and then crop any that are too long.

I have tried to use scale preset followed + crop preset. However rather that just cropping tall images, it pads out short images to fit the crop-height setting. I want it to leave short images alone. See image attatchment and the result (red border round images).

Is there a way to do what i want?
