Creation of Site

As for the initial construction of distributions, combination of distributions or upgrade of core and commons: This is best achieved by downloading and unzipping the files into a new local directory (Core first). At this point the other distributions can be saved into this new directory, overwriting where necessary. The next stage is to upload the contents of the directory to the new site by using an FTP program. Go to system upgrade below.

Updating Modules

Go to Modules in administration, and select "Install new module" at the top of the page. In the next screen enter the URL for the module into the "Install from a URL" box. As for the URL for the new module, the way to get the URL is to find the module at https://www.drupal.org/project/project_module/index. Near the bottom of the particular module's page, you should find something like:

Downloads
Recommended releases
Version Download Date Links
7.x-3.0 tar.gz (99.97 KB) | zip (118.61 KB) 2014-May-27 Notes
6.x-2.8 tar.gz (69.45 KB) | zip (84.61 KB) 2013-Nov-05 Notes
5.x-1.3 tar.gz (34.66 KB) | zip (41.46 KB) 2010-Jun-13 Notes
Other releases

If a 7.x version is listed, then select the tar.gz: Just hover over the link and right-click to save the file. If only 6.x versions and below are listed, then the module is most probably already included in the 7.x distribution or no longer suitable. If there is no 7.x version but there is an 8.x version, it also is most probably not suitable for the 7.x distribution.

Once we have pasted the URL in the "Install from a URL" box, select Install. When completed, the next screen appears. Either install the next module or select "Enable newly added modules," which then brings you back to the Modules page. Now find the newly installed module in the list and check the box to enable the module. Then find button Save Configuration and click it, which, when completed, will bring you back to Modules page. Now the database and system need to be updated and synchronized.

Updating and Synchronizing Database and System

To do this we change the URL at the top as follows: Delete from right all except the site address (e.g., http://siteaddress/), and then append update.php and then press enter. If the next screen displays "Check the error messages and try again" at the bottom, simply click "Try again." A screen with four paragraphs should now appear, the third of which allows you to put your site into maintenance mode. Open maintenance mode in new tab/window.

Select the maintenance mode tick box and then save the configuration. Go back to the previous window/tab and click "Continue." When completed, select either the front page or administration pages and click the "Go to maintenance" tab. Unselect the box and save the configuration. Now close the window/tab when complete and return to the Modules page. Complete any other configuration and permissions for the new module.
