I'd like to use the multi-post widget from the advanced settings but I do not see how I can display it.
'Multi-post' is not a setting in the display widget on the admin page.

In the middle of the page, click on the "Advanced" in the left side and you will get the option to select the Multi-Post Widget.

I then selected to have the sharethis widget in a block.
But I am not sure how to just have the multi-post widget show up instead of all the other providers using the admin configuration.
I would also like to be able to render either the multi-post or the provider icons. Is there a function which can help me do this?

ShareThis_Support CreditAttribution: ShareThis_Support commentedYes, you can easily select to show only Multi-Post widget.
"Under choose your services" option, just remove all the social services and and select Green ShareThis button only.

In the same way, you can select to show other service buttons and remove the ShareThis button.
