Problem/Motivation

The Newsletter module was started 3 years ago. By then also other newsletter solutions such as Simplenews already existed and were highly adopted.
Still, the module implemented features that have not been part of Simplenews and it took some different architectural decisions.
When Newsletter started, Simplenews was mainly in bugfixing mode and no strong development happened anymore.

A merge of the projects have been discussed, but possibly due to lack of time no one worked on it.

Now that Drupal 8 is coming up, we should decide for a sustainable future.

Proposed resolution

Simplenews started porting for Drupal 8 and is well progressed.

Also, we decided to apply Drupal 8 patterns and be cleanly extensible, pluggable. This allows flexibility.

Further separation might apply, we are thinking about separating the subscriber concept from simplenews completely.
We are also open to add further components that make sense.

Like i already mentioned in emails to @matslats and @miro_dietiker i am no longer interested in newsletter. I only minimally maintain it, to keep it usable :)
I have made matslats co-maintainer for 8.x, since he showed interest..so i guess he is the one to talk to now.

My course of action is the same like 2 years ago: There will be no 8.x version, just a migration path to simplenews.

But of course..if someone (like matslats) wants the namespace, or wants to build something that has different dirrections from simplenews, i will not stand on the way :)
