I'm having some issues that others have had described in this thread
https://www.drupal.org/node/2232431#comment-8883531
there are two solutions in thread.. one is updating my Omega 4 theme to the specified dev version
I am wary about just dropping in the new version and deleting the old one (I imagine that's sort of common sense ).. is that how I do it or can i just change selected files?
Second solution references a patch that worked for a number of people (and I believe done by the developer who generously put it in the new version)
Problem.. (embarrassed smile).. I don't know where to put the patch.

Thanks in advance. I'm sorry that I couldn't answer my question searching the site and I did try in earnest. Everyone doing all the work here is so generous that I feel like I should wear a thank you button on my head while browsing here actually.

I searched the entire Web
I searched the entire Web with Google 'how to apply a Drupal patch' and the top result was the following https://www.drupal.org/patch/apply. See also the links there to related pages. You must have been unlucky with your search. It is best not to rely on the on-site search box for this type thing.

thank you , facepalm and still a little curious
I'm sorry about the search. I struggled with how to form my question and when I finally got a good title it was really what my search query should have been.
My mind was wrapped up in "updating a theme", and of course many links and sources did come up for that type of query but none with any mythical silver bullet (which I think was my real hope even if not asked correctly)
I really did learn a lot from your link and the videos and comments therin . After watching the video, gaining some context, and then re-reading the thread it looked like the dev/maintainer preferred people download a newer theme version rather than patch.
There sure are a lot of warnings around about updating themes ... seems like something I'll need to try not to find a need to do if I can avoid it.
RE my problem> In this case, another facepalm ... my problem was creating compiling errors similar to others for an unrelated error I made......
Trying to fix something that wasn't broken did take me on a journey of discovery though !
