I only know programming very minimally. The staff that used to update our site is no longer working here; and the person that created our site with Drupal is very had to get a hold of as he is traveling overseas.

I was asked to update our site today; upon logging in, it advised there were a number of updates needed for our site; so I installed them; and then got this:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function date_default_timezone() in /home/casiteco/public_html/sites/all/modules/date/date_popup/date_popup.module on line 203

Now the dashboard is gone; so even though I've seen some options about clearing the cache, etc. in the date folder; I have no idea how to access that; how do you access the different modules when the dashboard is gone?

Any help is appreciated and I apologize for my limited knowledge.

I don't even know what our Drupal version is; and not sure how at this point I can find out without the dashboard.

No need to apologize.

You probably need a bit of paid help to get the site straightened out. If you have a recent backup, maybe restore it.

To answer your question directly, the way of handling these situations is normally from command line. It is possible to do a certain amount of work using file managers and so on built in to web host control panels, and with FTP programs, but using command line is actually a lot easier once you have overcome initial hesitation, and started to learn some commands.

Specifically, you may have an old version of Date module https://www.drupal.org/node/1346560 or the date_popup module may be missing.

I am assuming you are doing a minor update (you do not say how you attempted to update); that is, moving from one version of Drupal 6 to another or one or one version of Drupal 7 to another. If you tried to move from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 you have a much more serious problem, and in that case you should really be looking around for a backup you can restore. However, any updates you tried in the browser would be between minor versions of Drupal 7 modules.
