I don't know if this is the right issue queue for this, but I want to request the creation of an organization node for the Google Summer of Code. Since that's been responsible for sponsoring a lot of projects in the past, and we now have a dedicated field to list such sponsors (#2267789: Add a reference to supporting organizations on projects), not being able to list GSoC there makes this field a little less useful, in my opinion.

My thought here is that GSoC can create an Organization Node. And that is a great idea. The issue to discuss is whether or not GSoC falls under "Drupal services" and belongs in the Marketplace under the current guidelines. Or whether the guidelines need review.

no. at least, not unless we change the guidelines to include camps and associations and other slightly relevant groups.

in other words, it's completely out of the scope of Organizational listings.

This is not the first request for creating an organization node that doesn't quite fit the Marketplace criteria of the current guidelines. It seems the recent change to allow multiple organizations attached to individual profiles may have prompted this. I definitely don't think GSoC should be listed in the Marketplace. I really don't think GSoC should even be an organization node, just as I don't think some of the others should have been created. Creating these types of organizations has already caused some controversy and there will probably be more if we don't clarify the guidelines. I thought the reason for multiple organizations listed on an individual's profile was to reflect multiple employers. Totally agree with @silverwing that these types of organization nodes are only slightly relevant as they don't provide Drupal-related services and shouldn't be allowed unless we change the scope of the Organizational listings.

I can see an argument for including GSoC or LADA into the listing. One of the main reasons the listing was created to give a presentable forum to organisations that give (somwhat) back to the community. We want to give positive incentives. From that perspective I can see an argument pro including GSoC et al.

On the other hand we are watering down the other aims of the listing. We want to present a basis for employees to look at companies, present drupal service providers to potential customers etc.

I can see a lot of good reason to have these organisations listed in some form but I do agree that they simply don't feel right in the normal service listing. We already created the "supporting technologies" sub-component. Why not create another for camps, local drupal associations etc? This would surely be a positive incentive to further professionalize these orgs.

Yes, I agree the Drupal services listings and really any of the existing pages in /marketplace are no place for the pages which do not showcase a Drupal-service provider. To encourage contribution, we need something/somewhere different to highlight non-service providers.

Issue author *did not* ask about listing GSoC organization node in the Marketplace. This issue is also not in the 'Services listing' component. Therefore discussion about listing or not listing is irrelevant. The only thing he asked about is the actual creation of organization node for 'Google Summer of Code', so that there was a possibility to clearly mark projects developed thanks to this program.

I think it's fine to create such an organization node. Would be good to have information on who to contact and how to participate in GSoC next year on it. The only question is who should be node author. I am not sure who is now Drupal 'official representative' at GSoC. Maybe one of the people who run https://groups.drupal.org/google-summer-code? drunken monkey, why don't you ask them to create the node.

Hah, you are quite right. Guess we had it on our chest and waited for an opportunity to get it out.

OK, thanks, sent Slurpee a message. Let's see what he says. Good to hear that there don't seem to be any objections after all (if I understand you correctly).

Drupal's GSoC/GCI Org Admin here...thanks for including GSoC in the discussion. We think it is a great idea to list GSoC as a sponsoring organization and we're more than willing to maintain the node. The Drupal community has truly benefited from our initiatives and everyone should be aware of how these contributions materialized. Hopefully this will promote awareness of GSoC/GCI throughout our community to further push innovation while retaining young talented contributors. How do we move forward?

On another note, Google Code-In (GCI) for students aged 13-17 should probably be included too. Maybe our organization node can be for both GSoC and GCI contributions? Example, last year several GCI students became core contributors and this year we anticipate a few GCI students to port smaller modules to D8. While I have your attention...we're currently organizing tasks for GCI taking place in a few months and can use your ideas @ https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sFf5wnuCSkNauNw26-Kml0snplF4Fx0j...

However, I agree that GSoC/GCI does not need to be related to the Marketplace as we don't actually have services to offer clients.

More information about us and groups to join if you're interested in participating in either program @ https://groups.drupal.org/google-summer-code and https://groups.drupal.org/google-code-in

Great! So to move forward, Slurpee, please, go ahead and create a node, can be for both programs if you prefer.
Here is the url: https://www.drupal.org/node/add/organization

I guess then it would be a good idea to reach out to GSoC participants of previous years and ask them to update relevant project nodes. Totally up to you if to do it and how. I don't think there is anything else to discuss in the content queue about this. Thanks all!

Thank you for including us in the fun. We have an alumni directory that we rarely utilize to contact everyone, but I have a feeling many people will be proud to officially showcase their GSoC accomplishments. Many module pages already have a blurb in description noting GSoC attributions that we can clean up too.
