What does (status code: -111) mean?

I get a number of failed links return something like:

failed once (status code: -111).

however when I check the links there is certainly nothing wrong with them.

I also get 301 errors for external Facebook and Twitter links which I am certain exist without nay redirection taking place!

How can I fix this?
