Subscribe to entity files

It would be useful being able to subscribe to some entity file type.
In my case, I'm developing a website with a powerful file library and I'll have the File Type "Publication". Would be great if users could subscribe directly to the entity file type rather than have to create an specific content type.

The Subscriptions infrastructure should support this, but the mechanisms for maintaining subscriptions and triggering notifications would need to be implemented.
