Not a valid date for date fields just collecting Year info.

I'm using a date field configured to only collect the Year attribute. The widget for this field is set as Text Field (not popup calendar). Then when I try to add/edit any content type with such a field I get a "Not a valid date" clientside validation error message, even when I'm entering a correct year. See attached images as reference.
