Columns used in an index must be before any BLOB/TEXT columns. Currently the data column is 2nd; I propose to make the data column last so that the memory table could be used for the cache_* tables.

I do not see a downside.

Like it! But we should have a comment to explain why data being last is a good idea

Hm. Instead of (or in addition to) a comment, I'd rather add a very quick unit test that asserts the expectation that 'data' comes last, so that this improvement is not mistakenly destroyed by someone else in the future.

Looking at SchemaTest and I don't see a way to test the order in which the schema is defined inside of DatabaseBackend::schemaDefinition.

Moving to Need Review.

Don't we need an update path here to re-order existing cache tables?

I think we need to drop the table column from all the tables and then add it back again. But there are number of complexities here:

  • The cache factory during update is \Drupal\Core\Update\UpdateCacheBackendFactory() so you don't have database backend during an update
  • Could instantiate the regular cache factory to work out which are database backends.
  • You can't call drupal_get_module_schema() to find all the cache tables in the db.

This issue is being reviewed by the kind folks in Slack, #needs-review-queue-initiative. We are working to keep the size of Needs Review queue [2700+ issues] to around 400 (1 month or less), following Review a patch or merge request as a guide.

Tagging for tests
As mentioned in #17 this would need a path forward, some kind of update hook I imagine.
Tagging for subsystem review for their thoughts on this change also.

Version: 10.1.x-dev » 11.x-dev

Drupal core is moving towards using a “main” branch. As an interim step, a new 11.x branch has been opened, as Drupal.org infrastructure cannot currently fully support a branch named main. New developments and disruptive changes should now be targeted for the 11.x branch, which currently accepts only minor-version allowed changes. For more information, see the Drupal core minor version schedule and the Allowed changes during the Drupal core release cycle.
