We moved the required marker here #2152217: Remove theme_form_required_marker() from the theme system - use CSS instead to CSS from HTML. Sadly the character we chose doesn't display on IE9 & IE10.
The suggestion is to move to a small ✻ "Teardrop-Spoked Asterisk" to resolve this problem.
