Dear All,

This is pertaining to the site www.dentistrytoday.info .

Which as the best CMS for a discussion board/forums? PhpBB, Vbulletin, Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla or anything else?

What I am looking at is a discussion board which is easy to use, mobile & tab friendly, fast loading, easy to administer & backup etc.

Also it should be easy to upload attachments, do changes in the layout of the forums, send email newsletters etc. Plenty of support on the web should be available for minor trouble shooting.

At present it is difficult to register & post on the site. My programmers have opined that instead of refining & fixing up the errors on the current site it would be more economical &easier to relaunch the forums.
As long as the forums exist the support of programmers will be required.

So please suggest a CMS in which many programmers have expertise and it is easy to find a programmer.

A good drupal programmer is difficult to find and I think drupal development is little expensive.( Group pls correct me if I am wrong).

So I solicit suggestions as to in which CMS should we relaunch the site.

Hope to see a lot of responses & may thanks in advance for the same.

Regards,

Dr. VeerendraDarakh.

List of requirements for relaunching:-
1. The new site must be mobile & tab friendly.
2. There should be no loss of data while migrating.
3. The CMS must be easy to use & administer.
4. Taking backups must be easy.
5. Cost is a consideration & should not be very expensive.
6. Sending email newsletters should be easy. Newsletters statistics must be visible. It must be easy to find out which email addresses are blocked etc.
7. It must be easy to do changes in the layout, color scheme & appearance of the site.
8. It should be easy to register & post.
9. The CMS must send a notification if somebody has replied to a particular topic.
10. The forums must be fast loading.
11. There must be plenty of web support available for that particular CMS.
12. Hosting must be easy.
13. It must offer sufficient protection against spam attacks. Security updates must be easy to integrate.
14. Integration with social media must be easy. The users must be able to login with their Facebook account. Sharing links on social media sites must be easy.

To conclude I am looking at a simple, easy to use & administer message board which is not expensive.

This is a Drupal forum, so the only answers you are likely to get here will be 'Drupal', or no answer at all.

The core Drupal forum module isn't actually so good. The Advanced Forum module, along with a bunch of other add-on modules make it better, but still not as good as a dedicated forum software. But that said, a dedicated forum software won't do the other things you want as well as Drupal will.

The only real thing that can be said is that it's possible to do most/all of the things you want with Drupal, however it will take a bunch of customization, and will not be doable out of the box. It also will not be cheap. Drupal development costs more than development of other CMS, and the maintenance costs usually run higher as well.

Finally, this is in the wrong section. You can move the thread by editing the original post and choosing 'Before you start' as the forum.

Seems like you're posting on drupal.org for suggestions other than drupal, lol.

That said, as jay points out, the core forums are pretty mimimalistic so if you do wish to consider drupal you might checkout organic groups and/or the commons distro. Both of which provide much richer and more full featured community functionality.

.

Many thanks for the reply.

I am only looking for suggestions to build a strong , easy to use and register and post forums. I want all the features that a forum/ discussion group should contain. I have zeroed in on three: phpBB, VBulletin and drupal forums. I wish to know which one will best serve my purpose. Right I only want forums and do not wish anything else.

Could you elaborate some more on organic groups. Which one should I check out.

Thanks once again,

My point is, that by posting on drupal.org you are already skewing your results to those that tend to use drupal already. If you posted on a neutral site (not belonging to joomla, drupal, vbulletin, etc) you are more apt to get a balanced recommendation.

In any case, I can't speak to phpbb or vbulletin as I don't use them, I use drupal. For basic forum type functionality I find the simplicity and integration of the core forum module a plus (you can add the advanced_forum module to make it behave more like a traditional forum as well). For more full featured forum type functionality I like to use organic groups which is a module: http://drupal.org/project/og. You can see it in action over at groups.drupal.org. It's like a forum on steriods. I didn't see anything in the linked site that couldn't be done with drupal or drupal + og.

Ultimately the decision is yours. There is no single 'use this one' answer to your question. Your best bet is to take them for a test drive and see which one can do what you wish and feels 'comfortable' for you.

As you have narrowed down your choices among phpBB, VBulletin and drupal, I higly recommend phpBB. It can not be denied that Drupal is much more functional than the two, but it is not exclusive to forum building. The other two, however, are professional for forum and board. Among the two, why I recommend phpBB is due to that it is released under the GNU General Public License, meaning that the software is free to use. Also, phpBB brings is its compatibility with many data storage systems like Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, and FireBird. Therefore, there is no need for you to worry about what kind of database your hosting company utilizes. Lastly, phpBB is supported with hundreds of attractive themes for choosing.

Normally, it seems that WordPress or Joomla is good. But they both have limited functionality as compared to Drupal. Since Drupal can perform all the functions that WordPress, Joomla or any other system available in the market cannot perform together. So the bottom line is Drupal is best.
