Using the Title module (title_field), the field is shown but is underneath the permalink box and is the same size as other form elements. Could a content type using title_field have a form the same as when using a normal title?

Wouldn't it be a feature request since we don't support title_field? The issue is that the 'title' field renders in the form differently than the 'title_field' so our existing styling doesn't pick it up.

Well, we don't want to do anything that prevents the Title module from working. We've counted similar issues where Panopoly interferes with something in contrib that would have work in vanilla Drupal as bugs.
