I've been working on a Drupal 8 port of this module over here: https://github.com/typhonius/drupal-fast_404-8

Whilst there're a few configuration items that need completing and code commenting that needs finishing, it's in a fairly good place on at least the latest alpha. What're the steps to getting an 8.x branch of the module created so we can start making issues against it and further building on the start that's been made!

This has been done and works with D8 as of the date of this comment. There's an 8.x-1.x branch to patch against for future improvements.
