Above was from Node-Views variant as displayed, but same occurred in a view variant where no relationship was set up for the parent child in 'relationships' setting, and contextual filter was not set for that relationship.

This leads me to believe that problem actually was in this view variant because it was set (erroneously) as tree adjacency.

So, maybe the message is merely misleading, showing an actual problem, but "Main field is invalid: " is not very indicative.
