I just made a clean install of the newly released Drupal 6.0. After checking for updates, status report says:

"Drupal core update status Not secure! (version 6.0-rc4 available)"

Confirmed. You get a security update reminder on every admin page you visit.

This is due to the server side end (see http://drupal.org/node/184418) and will be fixed shortly. You may need to manually fetch the update status before it appears properly on your site.
