japerryHello,
The issue of search_api vs apachesolr is being discussed here: #2009148: Consider re-architecting Commons Search Solr
Currently, commons integrates with the apachesolr module and comes bundled with it. For anything more than a very simple site, its suggested to use Solr since it offers a better end user experience and takes the load off drupal/php/mysql. So definitely, if you can use solr I'd recommend it.

I've installed solr.
Just a note the apachesolr module version that ships with commons
doesn't work with solr 4.6
The dev version does work with solr 4.6
This has been confirmed on this issue
https://drupal.org/node/2154913
I hope that's helpful
Many Thanks again for all your useful feedback
Kind Regards
Charles
