Yeah, this seems like the exact same thing as global redirect.

Hmm, I'd been looking for a module for permalink support, but I hadn't been able to find one. The reason is very obvious now: Global Redirect supports them, but just doesn't call them permalinks. I'll check the possibilities of collaborating out as soon as I have some spare time again.
