After a lot of wasted time I finally discovered that SHS doesn't work with entities, only nodes.

I recommend you make a note of this in the module description, or better yet, add support for entities. It's a fairly common use case, in particular as a Views exposed filter.

Hierarchical Select doesn't support exposed filters in D7 yet, although it was so slow as to be virtually unusable anyway.

Actually it does appear to work with ECK entities, but the Views exposed filter integration does not.
