Recent information about dataURI's and the effect they have on mobile devices means that the CSS Embedded module is not future proof.

This knowledge along with the idea of a image style/cache sprite means that sprite generation in Drupal has some potential. So the need has arisen to create a sprite lib module and then have a node and css submodule to take advantage of it. Older code
