Is the content on the home page (for anonymous users) such as recent site activity, most active group, contributors and upcoming events immediately updated when activity occurs or does cron have to execute to rebuild cache to include the content?

When searching as an anonymous user, is the content immediately available when the content has been added or does cron have to execute to rebuild cache?

What is the best option to have fresh content available as it is added(via authenticated user) when an anonymous user views the site?
