It seems that a v2.x version of the mailchimp-api-php is available - located in bitbucket. How about using that instead?

We're currently working on a 3.x branch of the module that will leverage the 2.0 version of the API. There are a number of major differences, so it's not just a matter of a switching out API versions. Look for a release towards the end of Q1.
