I am about to start an intranet project for a small company with wikis, blogs, calendars, instant messaging/shouts and links to BI information. Originally I thought to base it on Open Atrium 1 or 2 but given the imminent arrival of Drupal 8 is it worth hanging on and waiting for that release before embarking on the project?

Any advice greatly appreciated by a Drupal newbie.

it's not nearly as imminent as you might think. Moreover, there will be a significant lag in contrib even after d8 is released. imo waiting for d8 means, at minimum, likely a year before you can build the same type of site now that you can with d7 and it could be even longer. And who knows how long open atrium for d8 would take-- it took significantly longer for d7 than most contribs, and there weren't nearly as many architectural changes in the d6-67 cycle as there are the d7-d8 cycle.

Thanks for the reply - I think I'll be starting in d7!

Agree, there's no day like the present :-)

D7 is and will still be a good and supported platform when D8 is released. The migration from D7 to D8 should give you a clear upgrade path in the future (although expect support for migrations between versions to be released after D8's initial release).

I typically find that I'm still opting for the previous version of Drupal for 6 month after the initial release. Never mind waiting for it! ;-)

Yep, I'm just repeating really to provide social proof ;-)

My advise; start with d7, and then when wait a couple of month after the d8 release before you upgrade (to weed out the bugs). Cheers.

Might it not be worse attempting an upgrade?

I think that this depends on a number of factors. An absolute show stopper would be a requirement for a module that hadn't yet been converted. I am using D8 and there seem to be a few hiccoughs in the admin area, but nothing terminal. If you are maintaining the site, this might not be an issue. A lot more of D8 is included in core so you wouldn't be reliant as much on contrib modules. Naturally documentation is even weaker than normal.

The case for using D8 is that if you are just learning there will be no need to relearn (and no need to upgrade). Twig is wonderful.
