Provide details on "subpanels"

I found reference to a "subpanel" feature in the code and was trying to get it working. It looks like it provides the ability to show the user different buddy lists (possibly putting buddies into different groups/subpanels?). The code I was able to whip up is attached. Is this a supported feature of the module, and is there any better documentation about this feature?
