Process hangs when adding a user role to a list

After creating a list, I edit it and add another role and re-save. The process eventually times out. However, I can delete the list and recreate it including the role, and it saves without issue. I do not have "Automatically add eligible users" checked. I do have 50,000 users, not sure if the number is an issue.
