Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome):

The Challenge

We were asked to design and develop a website for The Cumberland Pencil Company for The Derwent Art Prize Competition. The site would allow artists to upload their artwork and anyone to register and vote for their favourite submissions.

The Solution

Hydrant produced a website using ‘responsive design’ that adapts to work on mobile and tablet devices, commissioning regular partners Split for graphics to match the competition branding.

The site uses Drupal Commerce to allow artists to easily submit entries to the competition. Artists are charged £10 for the first competition entry and then £2 for further entries, with a limit of 6 entries per artist.

The site has a "lifecycle" it will progress through as the competition goes through various stages. The Cumberland Pencil Company have full control over what stage in the competition the site is at, including; submission entries to be open or closed, voting on submissions to be open or closed and to display the results of the competition after winners have been decided. As well as the general public, artists are also able to vote for other artists work (but not their own).

The Results

  • Easy to manage website to control stage of competition
  • Large number of artist submissions
  • Facilities to measure voting per submission
  • High volume of traffic to the site
  • Easy to use content management and data collection
