Hi,

I was wondering if HostMonster if fast and reliable enough for a Drupal based site?

I am looking into making a website and I want to make it with Drupal, I am just having a hard time picking the host. I really like HostMonster's prices. And they have some nice features.

Also are there MYSQL servers responsive and fast? I plan on having 2 Drupal Installs (2 seperate domains on one account) plus a LiveChat Support program installed the will handel chat operations for 3 sites. It will also have a ticket system integrated into it on top of it (will also handel 3 sites) I will also most likely have 1-2 forums on there as well.

Would HostMonster's hosting account be able to handel this?

Thanks,

Cory

From what I've read, HostMonster has very strict CPU throttling, which can be a problem if you've got a lot of users or you're running heavy modules.

I have HostMonster for one of my sites... Nothing to complain but I think I will go elsewhere... Not the fastest but perfect for what it does for me...

BTW: you can take a look at mine www.realgriffs.com

I haven't tried HostGator with Drupal, but you can try them out for just one cent using a HostGator
coupon code
and see how good they are.

I used hostgator with my live site http://mathalino.com (running in Drupal 5.7) and a test site for our church (under development - no domain as of now; running in Drupal 6.2). I encountered NO Major problem with hostgator for my 5 months of stay. I tried their ticket system, it works fine. I hope this will always go this way.

A minor problem I encountered, hostgator has an issue of sending email to yahoo. This is a major problem to many and maybe a major problem for you, but this is a minor problem for me.

Hi Cory,

Here is my experience with Hostgator.

This company provided the worst service of any hosting company we have ever hosted with (and we have hosted with dozens about a ten-year period). Our server sent out listing confirmation emails and hostgator shut it down without any warning or attempt to contact us. This was a major site and caused extensive damage to our operations. They said we had exceeded there 200 emails an hour limit. This was not a continually ongoing process at that time and probably only exceeded their limit it by less than 100 emails within that one given hour. We then quickly made the decision to move our site to another host at that point, and after getting access again to our server again, we moved our entire site to another host. Then we filed a cancellation form per their instructions back in January 2008, but they never cancelled our account (it's now May 2008). Then, we filed the form again several days ago when contacting them about the problem. They have consistently refused to close our account, causing us to waste an enormous amount of valuable time dealing with this issue. They finally sent us a notice it was closed, then two days later sent us another notice saying it wasn't. They have continued to utilize stalling and delay tactics to avoid giving any type of refund (their satisfaction guarantee is a farce) and keep the account open so they can charge our card again. All site owners are warned to never host with this company, not only do they have ridiculous limitations on almost everything hidden in their contract you agree to (when trying to act like they give you the best deal with unlimited everything), but wait until you try to cancel your account--a living nightmare. This has gotten so serious that we have filed complaints with the BBB, FBI, and FTC as it now stands.

Hostmonster is a little brother of Bluehost.

I had nothig but problems with Bluehost.

I would highly recommend NOT using Bluehost or Hostmaster.

Read about people using Drupal at the Bluehost forum.

I am testing out hostmonster now with drupal 5.6 and 6.x rc2. this is what I notice. first the latest fantastico install is drupal 5.4. so I installed 5.6 myself. I also installed d6. You have to request SSH but it works fine.

The tech staff knows nothing at all about Drupal.
I also ran into a problem with I loaded all of the modules and themes into the system. The admin page just completely crashes as it runs out of memory. I sort of solved this in php.ini file by raising the max mem parameter to 16m. but I have not tested it out completely.

also, HM says they have Mod_rewrite activated , but in D6, it is not working.

anyway... my thoughts.

I have a Host Monster, Blue Host and Host Gator account, each running a dozen drupal sites v4 and v5 with postgres and mysql. I have no complaints, smooth sailing. hm and bh have a newer cPanel version than hg that I like.

Mind you I had previously tried godaddy so anything might seem good after that experience!

HostMonster is a good choice for Drupal beginner even it's has some restrainst on the server usage. This is open, and actually, I have hosted around 7 web sites in one account, which includes 2 Drupal sites and 3 Joomla sites. And I am very satisfied with their service. Right now, I have more than 500 unique visitor per day (around 1500 visitors if counting the repeat), thing is still going well.

I still need to observe when I need open an new account and move one of my heavy site out, but so far, I would like to wait.

In general, Hostmonster is a great choice if you just start your Drupal site.

Hostmonster has been great so far.
Now my only other experience is with Godaddy hosting, which is horrendous. And Doteasy, which was almost worse (is that even possible?).

Hostmonster tech support is quick to reply and helpful (I don't expect them to know everything). The hostmonster forums are very good. Most of my host specific questions can get answered there.

Uptime is quite good. That is why I choose them. And the price very reasonable.
An important thing to note is that addon domains all share the same database. Fine for small sites, but I wouldn't overdo it. If any of my sites get to big I will just purchase another account.

Right now they are running PHP 5.2.11 and MySQL database 5.1.43. I had some issues getting my clients site migrated from WAMP. I anyone runs into the same situation I would be happy to help.

Cheers,
Tai

Hostmonster and Bluehost are the same operation, they even operate from the same building(s). I was told this by one of their reps on LiveChat. If I recall correctly, FastHost was part of the same operation too.

All three companies offer attractive prices but just bear in mind that prices go up after the initial promotion period. If you sign up paying 3.95 per month you might be paying 7.95 per month two years later. Of course, you could change hosting provider to get a better promotion but that's a pain and would involve down time. Of course, that's what they want.

Hostmonster/Bluehost have also come in for some criticism lately for their unannounced security changes that took a lot of Drupal sites down earlier this month.

Despite all the above criticisms, I still use them. They are "ok" and I like the support on LiveChat as I'm not in the US and don't want to call a help center. Performance is sometimes sluggish even though my site has few users. Each server hosts hundreds of websites, many of which could be running Drupal or other CMS.

Hostmonster is slow sometimes. There must be something better.

I am going to try out AN hosting after a friend recommended it. Apparently, they are faster with databases according to John Forsythe, creator of DrupalModules.com. You can read his recommendation here.
I am going to sign up with AN hosting and see for myself.

My story is atypical, but important.
I purchased a monthly to develop, stage and launch on Host Gator. I am a recent American expat in Hong Kong.
I paid with PayPal and thanks to CP and the fact that I already had the site pretty well built, I was blazing away setting up configuration for about 3 1/2 hours. At that time I got a "Webmaster Contact Host Gator" redirect for all page requests.
So as I was coerced, I opened a chat session with their support staff to learn that they wanted a Photo ID! Of course, I am a criminal until proven innocent...
After haggling around about 1/2 hour, I finally broke down and scanned them a passport photo. However This Was Not Good Enough! They told me they needed a heartfelt explanation of why I was purchasing Web Hosting from Hong Kong with my money in an American PayPal account.
Myself and my lovely Cantonese wife value our privacy. I told them it was noneya and filled out a complaint form letting them know they owed me $234 for my wasted time. And BTW, no way to recover my lost files and data.

We've used a lot of different hosts: bluehost, hostmonster, media temple grid, rackspace cloud, etc.

Hostmonster isn't actually that bad, we found Media Temple's Grid hosting to be much worse in terms of performance.

You absolutely must tune your Drupal install to be as lean as possible before deploying on a low-end host. You can read about our experience here if you like: http://bitcookie.com/blog/drupal-7-on-hostmonster-and-bluehost
