Depending on what you want to do with this information, you should look at either Organic Groups (which sets up full user groups for your members, with may other features), or simply just putting a set of radio button options in the Profile module that comes with Drupal core.

These are modules that already exist. You can simply download and install on your site. Organic Groups is here: http://drupal.org/project/og

Or you can just add a simple field in the Profile module you already have, like this: http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/profile

It depends on what you want to do with these groups. If you are simply allowing the users to join a group that shows their interest on their profile, then just use the profile module. If you want full user groups with much more functionality, try out Organic Groups.
