Mismatched file counts after failed uploads

I had a few uploads fail on a test server where the file system permissions weren't sorted and certain directories weren't present (nutshell version: Drupal couldn't write the files to disk on the server). After fixing the perms and successfully uploading a test file I noticed that my file counts were mismatched (see attached image).

I've used the audit feature on each container but that returns no issues and makes no difference. I've tried multiple cache clears and cron runs - still no dice.

I guess something got written to the db on each failed upload and now Storage API is confused. No problem for now as this all happened on a test environment but thought you guys would like to know in case you want to build in some tests for this kind of thing.
