I've got a rules link field in views. Works well if the user has permission to use the rules link, but if they don't have permission then the link is not displayed (correct) but the actual field is. I have a table and the column is displayed. Is there a way to exclude the field?

You can configured that in views:
Go to your field settings for the link. Open the "No Result Behaviour" fieldset and check the "Hide if empty" checkbox. Save the field settings and your view, and the rules link field won't be rendered, if empty.
