I just noticed this today - not sure when this happened. I guess that since no one else has posted a question about this, then it must be some sort of crazy configuration error on my end. All of the labels for image styles seem to be missing. This is true for the image styles management page, as well as in Views. I've attached a screenshot of the problem.

What could cause something like this to happen?

So, it looks like this error has changed. Now, all of the style names are back except for the one that I just created. Every time I click "Update style" it removes the name from the field.
