Tried get the switcher to be displayed on the frontpage. Tried several methods. With other blocks it does work properly. Only after installing the dev version I could get this to work properly.

If it is set to show all languages users can select a different language and it does work, but on reload defaults back to the default language even when the site is obviously in a different one.

Which language negotiation method are you using?
Locale configuration is a lot more complex than it seems at first glance and without providing enough information is imposible to know which is the issue.
To be sure this is a language switcher dropdown module issue it would be a good idea to enable the language switcher block provided by locale module and check if both blocks work the same or not.
