The Join group link does not show and the group_group field is not in the &$build variable (in a hook_node_view_alter).

Title:No "Join group" when set to "Anyone can join and contribute"» Clarify "Anyone can join and contribute" text
Issue tags:+Commons 7.x-3.3 radar

This is by design: With public groups, anybody who joins can post into the group, and any authenticated user can join the group. Therefore, we removed the arbitrary step of forcing users to first join before contributing content. Instead, a user is automatically marked as a contributor when she posts content into a group.

I agree that "Anyone can join and contribute" might not set the right expectations here. Instead, I propose "Any site member can contribute."

Patch works as design and update also worked.

I believe we can commit this without the hook_update_N() implementation since this feature is new after 3.2 and thus the initial definition of this field is sufficient for upgrading sites.

#2 is committed without the changes to commons_groups.install.

Thanks, RobKoberg for pointing this out and Devin Carlson for the patch!
