The unique content creation workflow allows AAS members and people from the wider community to submit news, events, letters, and other content of interest to the AAS and its members. It then goes through an editorial review by AAS staffers, allowing for efficient publication of high-quality, crowd-sourced content.

American Astronomical Society won a 2013 Blue Drop Award for Best Association Website Built With Drupal.

Why Drupal was chosen:

The American Astronomical Society needed a hefty CMS to handle its articles, events and other posts. Users can submit their own articles that go through moderation before publishing.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome):

Astronomers become astronomers because they like the excitement of discovery. So the American Astronomical Society wanted a redesigned online presence that was visually exciting, with clear and clean paths to get relevant information to their various audiences.

The Bluespark team flew to Washington D.C. to meet with the folks at AAS. In attendance: Content managers from several different departments, the program director, and internal Drupal developers with whom we’d be working in tandem. Over the course of two-and-a-half days, our UX and creative team documented a solid user-centric approach for the membership-driven site. Because Discovery went so well, AAS was able to quickly iterate through subsequent design and development sprints.

Community Features: Bluespark developed a content creation workflow that allows AAS members and people from the wider community to submit news, events, letters, and other content of interest to the AAS and its members. It then goes through an editorial review by AAS staffers, allowing for efficient publication of high-quality, crowd-sourced content.

Third Party Integration: Bluespark developed custom Drupal integration for AAS' CRM platform of choice: iMIS. This solution offers easy self-service management of most end user data without having to leave the Drupal platform, and provides a single sign-on solution when it is necessary to interact directly with iMIS.
