I am using the Hierarchical Select module currently on a couple taxonomy term reference fields. I have about 1000 nodes with data already saved in these fields.

Is it possible to "upgrade" from Hierarchical Select to SHS and keep all my data? Are there any special steps to follow?

Unfortunately there is no easy way to move from Hierarchical Select to Simple hierarchical select. The main problem would be the stored lineage in HS.
