A couple of years ago someone wrote a module to create different confirmation messages based on form values but this seems to not work for 7.x-4.0.

Has anyone found a successful solution for conditional confirmation messages for 7x-4.0 and above?

I would suggest you find the module and work with them to update to 7.x-4.x. Alternatively, you might be able to use the build-in conditionals to show various markup components on the last page. Not quite the same as the confirmation message, but maybe would suit your use case.
